If you've shopped for a Kanchipuram silk saree online, you've probably noticed that almost every seller calls their saree "authentic" or "pure silk." But with so many soft silk and art-silk imitations in the market, how do you actually tell the difference before you buy?
At Silk Romance by Abi Silks, we've been weaving soft silk and Kanchipuram-style sarees in Sirumugai, Coimbatore for over 50 years, and this is the same guidance we give customers who visit our loom directly. Here's what to actually look for.
1. Check for Silk Mark Certification
The Silk Mark is India's official quality assurance label for pure silk products, issued by the Silk Mark Organisation of India. A genuine Kanchipuram or soft silk saree should carry this certification, which confirms the fabric is 100% natural silk rather than a silk-blend or synthetic substitute. If a seller can't show you Silk Mark certification, treat that as a warning sign, not a technicality.
2. Look at the Zari Work Closely
Traditional Kanchipuram sarees use zari - metallic thread woven into the border and pallu - that was historically pure gold or silver thread. Today, most zari is a silver thread coated in gold, which is still considered authentic and is what you'll find in genuine handloom pieces. What you want to avoid is synthetic imitation zari, which looks shinier at first glance but fades and tarnishes quickly. Authentic zari has a slightly matte, warm gold tone rather than a bright, plasticky shine.
3. Feel the Fabric and the Weight
Pure mulberry silk has a distinct texture: smooth but not slippery, with a natural sheen rather than an artificial glossy finish. Authentic soft silk and Kanchipuram sarees also carry noticeable weight, generally in the 500-650 gram range for a soft silk saree with an attached blouse piece, and more for a full Kanchipuram bridal weave. A saree that feels unusually light or plasticky to the touch is often an art-silk substitute.
4. Understand the Handloom Origin
Sirumugai, our home base in Coimbatore district, is part of Tamil Nadu's long-standing handloom weaving belt. Sarees woven here carry generations of technique passed down through weaving families, not mass-produced on power looms. Ask any seller where their sarees are actually woven; a genuine handloom saree will have a clear regional origin, not a vague made-in-India label.
5. Ask for a Video Call Before You Buy
Because color, drape, and zari detail are hard to judge from a single product photo, we offer a video call facility so you can inspect the saree in real time before it ships, whether you're ordering from within India or from abroad. This is especially useful for bridal and special-occasion sarees, where color accuracy matters most.
Why This Matters for Your Purchase
A Kanchipuram or soft silk saree is often a once-in-a-few-years purchase, bought for a wedding, a festival, or a milestone occasion. Knowing these five checks means you are buying based on the saree's actual quality, not just marketing language.
At Silk Romance by Abi Silks, every saree we sell is Silk Mark certified, handwoven in Sirumugai, and available for a live video inspection before dispatch. You can browse our Kanjeevaram silk saree collection or our Vivaha bridal collection to see the weaves discussed above for yourself.
